I opened up the big shipping box to find a selection of five beautifully wrapped parcels nestled inside! Unsurprisingly, it was an early Valentine's day gift from my sweetheart. I decided to hold out on opening them until the actual day and it was well worth the wait. And who doesn't love having a little corner full of lovely, beautifully wrapped surprises waiting to be opened?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmmpnETkRYE/TzxOK570hPI/AAAAAAAAASc/0u-S2R2RV2A/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmmpnETkRYE/TzxOK570hPI/AAAAAAAAASc/0u-S2R2RV2A/s320/photo.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Here's a picture of the beautiful boxes... I loved looking at them all week! It was hard not to want to just open them up and see what lovely things were inside. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yw2j4KIhULg/TzxNyG51o5I/AAAAAAAAASM/cc9oRQm73wc/s1600/photo%286%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yw2j4KIhULg/TzxNyG51o5I/AAAAAAAAASM/cc9oRQm73wc/s320/photo%286%29.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> The boxes that held all of the presents were even more beautiful than the outside wrapping! I snapped some photos of the boxes and presents on my phone... the quality isn't great but I just loved the kraft paper faux bois print on the boxes. So simple and so perfect!</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_vbZjZpOij8/TzxNxs55VkI/AAAAAAAAASE/VLTyhPel2dA/s1600/photo%285%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_vbZjZpOij8/TzxNxs55VkI/AAAAAAAAASE/VLTyhPel2dA/s320/photo%285%29.JPG" width="216" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GnqWEp-ZN_8/TzxNvn9nlUI/AAAAAAAAARs/Rh3AK8Ge7Gw/s1600/photo%282%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GnqWEp-ZN_8/TzxNvn9nlUI/AAAAAAAAARs/Rh3AK8Ge7Gw/s320/photo%282%29.JPG" width="217" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">There are very few things I love more than beautiful boxes and beautiful paper but the actual gifts inside were definitely the best part! I opened up the first box-- filled with six Honey & Tobacco tea lights. The scent of them hit me before I even opened the baker's twine tied box and pulled out the candles, wrapped in beautiful bee-printed tissue paper! I wish there was a way to digitally convey fragrances-- the smell is so divine. I can't wait to light them up! In the second box was a beautiful candle in an antiqued tin can with a wooden top-- so gorgeous and the smell was equally lovely! There was also a beautiful round, ash wood cutting board. It matches the larger size I already have and is perfect for serving cheese or cutting up some fresh fruit. I can't wait to use it. And this gift went perfectly with the set of Beehive Kitchenware Heart Measuring Spoons. Though it's really impossible to pick a favorite gift-- I was absolutely blown away by the woven cotton wreath that I opened last. What a gorgeous treasure! I have yet to find the perfect spot for it but I can't wait to hang it and look at it every day. And on top of all of that, yesterday I came home to 24 beautiful Valentine's Day roses! Am I lucky or what? Long distance isn't the easiest thing but having a sweetheart as thoughtful as this sure does make it easier!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">It turned out to be a lovely Valentine's day. Even though I didn't get to spend it with my sweetheart, we reminded each other how much we care about one another and I got to spend the day with some of my closest friends. Although it's a commercial holiday for sure, I love having the opportunity to surround myself with the people I love and to think about all the people who I can't be with every day. I wish more days were like that and I hope that, in this coming year, I can work towards making more ordinary days more loving and thoughtful. I hope to bring more romance into everything I do. I'm lucky to have such wonderful friends, an incredible, supportive family, and a beautiful partner to share my life with. I love them all so much and hope to share that love with them not just on special days, but every day. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">With love & hugs to all!</div>Ninahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366607227785373605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726805108195626286.post-86119253950441264392012-02-15T13:40:00.002-05:002012-02-15T19:26:34.280-05:00Where the blossoms blossom....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XS2OH2C0JXg/TzxM-yv-1KI/AAAAAAAAARk/gHpkvBi7UQs/s1600/photo%281%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XS2OH2C0JXg/TzxM-yv-1KI/AAAAAAAAARk/gHpkvBi7UQs/s320/photo%281%29.JPG" width="217" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Lovely little blossoms </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

I've been so busy with all kinds of preparations and plenty of other busy stuff, that I haven't had much time to think about or plan for our time together in New York! Well, with just two days until he's home, I thought I would post some of my favorite places that I'm hoping to visit together. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

I cant help but want to share the deliciousness with Aak. One of my best friends had some of what I think was the most delicious options on the menu: a bowl of wild mushroom and farro with a walnut pistou. I had a bowl of their delicious smoked butternut squash soup. The bread basket is also a must, which we had served with savory ginger butter. I just noticed they have changed many of the options with the winter season, and I can't wait to try the new additions to the menu! Did I mention that their Akvavit and Genever cocktails are to die for?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Replete with dim lighting, endless subway tile, and some of the best cocktails ever, it's a wonderful place to wind down after a long day. I especially love their "Keep calm, carry on" option. Just tell your bartender what flavors and spirits you're in the mood for and they'll whip up a surprise libation! Wonderful!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A good friend of mine has been house-sitting a wonderful apartment on the upper west side. I've had the pleasure of visiting a few times for some wonderful evenings of dinner, drinks, and cuddling with the owner's two cats-- Boo and Bella. I snapped a few photos of the apartment early on Friday morning. The light was just gorgeous and I couldn't help but document some of the inspiring, quirky designs in the apartment. The whole place is filled with artwork, plants, and antiques... my favorite things! Take a peek at some of the rooms below: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Here's little inspiration created via Polyvore. I've been feeling a little antsy for winter-time, and these items fit the bill perfectly with their silver, white, and all-over neutral tones. I love it! I can't wait to have my own kitchen someday soon to fill with lovely things, and lots of yummy cooking.<br />
<br />
Happy weekend everyone!</div></div>Ninahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366607227785373605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726805108195626286.post-84102156021224313522011-12-02T11:30:00.001-05:002011-12-08T11:02:57.469-05:00HOLIDAY CHEERIts a brisk and sunny day here in New York. I absolutely love this time of year. Although it can be stressful, I love the optimism and excitement that comes juts before the holidays. The thought of sitting with your loved ones, huddled under warm woolen blankets while sipping cocoa and marshmallows just makes me giddy, like I'm eight years old all over again.<br />
<br />
I'm especially excited because I'll be lucky enough to have some of my most loved with me this Christmas. It will be so wonderful to spend lots of time with my family and friends and then I'll be heading back with my sweetheart, to stay with him in England for a bit! Sometimes I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.<br />
<br />
I've been working on my knitting lately as well-- nothing fancy, just a plain old scarf, but I'm definitely excited to finish it up as the cold weather rolls in! It's been nice to spend time with my Grandma and learn about something she knows so well.<br />
<br />
So, In the spirit of the holidays (and, I suppose, the consumerism that comes along with it), here's a sampling of some lovely items that seem perfect alongside this late autumn/ early winter. Happy December!<br />
<br />

I've been positively awful at updating my posts here lately. Really, I don't have much of an excuse. I almost want to say that there's been too much to say and that I've had trouble distilling it all, but really, time has just been flying! I hope to get to say a bit more about all of the incredible things I've been up to, but in the meantime, here's a brief update of some of the things I've been doing. I just started a full time job, which has also taken me away from writing a bit. Hopefully, as I get more used to my new schedule, I'll be able to balance all the work I have to and want to be doing! As for today, it's a gorgeous autumn day in New York. Lucky me, I work right by the High Line (literally steps away!) and so I get to see, what I think, is New York at it's most beautiful. If you haven't been yet, you must visit. Absolutely must! They recently expanded the park and it's more beautiful than ever. And on the rare days that it isn't raining, it's the perfect place to stroll and step away from manhattan's chaos! I hope to take some snapshots of my own soon, but here are some images from the High Line's <a href="http://www.thehighline,org">website</a>. They don't even do the park justice!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P1iV1sC3wi0/Tpm5FP1UvRI/AAAAAAAAAM0/VTVV2PSdtME/s1600/Highline.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P1iV1sC3wi0/Tpm5FP1UvRI/AAAAAAAAAM0/VTVV2PSdtME/s400/Highline.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Some beautiful brown grasses growing on the side of the path. I love the combination of structure and wildness that is pervasive through the High Line's architecture and landscaping. The combination of constructed elements with the unbridled quality of the plants is just gorgeous!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nxy71AiFYAY/Tpm6CFk4LMI/AAAAAAAAAM8/BqDuxEmiPCc/s1600/Highline+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nxy71AiFYAY/Tpm6CFk4LMI/AAAAAAAAAM8/BqDuxEmiPCc/s400/Highline+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Another beautiful shot! Expect some images of my own soon!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In other news, I just want to share some other great things I've discovered/ really gotten to explore recently. First off, a gorgeous publication called <a href="http://www.kinfolkmag.com/magazine/">Kinfolk Magazine</a>. I can't wait to order myself an issue! This self proclaimed "guide for small gatherings" seems to be overflowing with gorgeous ideas, images, and inspiration. Here's a little peek from the magazine's latest issue, posted on their stunning <a href="http://www.kinfolkmag.com/journal/">Journal </a>page:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IJ3RXOWftgE/Tpm-ZGitk2I/AAAAAAAAANE/AJHjx3LyKrQ/s1600/kinfolkmagazine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IJ3RXOWftgE/Tpm-ZGitk2I/AAAAAAAAANE/AJHjx3LyKrQ/s400/kinfolkmagazine.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Be sure to check them out!</div></div><div><br />
</div><div>Also, I recently came back to a blog I had happened upon some time ago, but hadn't had the opportunity to look at in-depth: Lobster & Swan. Not only do they have a perfectly quirky name, the whole blog is filled with gorgeous ideas and photographs. Be sure to take a look <a href="http://blog.lobsterandswan.com/">here</a>! I'm positively OBSESSED with the items in the most recent October Survival Guide...</div><div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Alright, alright. This hasn't been the <i>most</i> original post I've done to date. But stay tuned! I'll be posting again soon with some details about some recent festival visits, fall recipes, and more outings and activities! Have a beautiful weekend!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Yes, that's right folks, I got an iphone! I never thought the day would come but it has and, despite four hours on the phone with three different (all very lovely and very helpful) Verizon customer service agents, and my persistent struggle to understand all of the endless features that Apple has to offer, it's a pretty darn cool device. I've already gone a little app crazy, but my favorite discovery so far is "Classic TOY" photo app... it takes great photos and has endless filters. I'm especially loving the effects of the 70sage, Color Negative Film, and Vintage Prints filters. They make for some gorgeous, ethereal, and nostalgic lo-fi shots!<br />
<br />
Besides that, I ran some errands with my mom. Afterwards, we had lunch at St. Germain, a sweet little French cafe in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. It was a rainy day and so we ordered a couple of hot chocolates, a salade nicoise, and a salade avec chevre chaud (warm goat cheese). Everything was delicious and to top it off, I brought home a lovely little chocolate-orange mousse cake. Besides the wonderful company and good food, it was a great opportunity to try out the camera on my new iphone. I took a couple of photos. I think the filters from the Classic TOY app give the pictures a bit of that Parisian nostalgia that I adore (and miss) so much!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pb3H4sR0czA/TnqAKtZYTpI/AAAAAAAAAMU/oMVZBWvi9lM/s1600/CLST_-188399462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pb3H4sR0czA/TnqAKtZYTpI/AAAAAAAAAMU/oMVZBWvi9lM/s320/CLST_-188399462.jpg" width="217" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> The outside of the cafe. </div> I've been trying to keep busy the past few weeks (in between applying for jobs!) and am proud to say that, after a week of practice, I am about to begin knitting my first scarf! I'm so excited and will definitely post more on my progress soon. I also have been playing a lot of guitar and learning new songs. I even learned a bit of Tai-Chi. Now if only this skills would translate into a viable job I'd be set! But, I've also been listening to some new music. I just can't get Kurt Vile's song, "Baby's Arms" out of my head so I'm going to share it here, along with the adorable music video.<br />
<br />

As much as I love summer, I get antsy as September comes around and I begin to long for cooler weather, mulled cider, harvest picnics, and all the tastes that autumn brings. Still, with the persistent warm weather, everything feels in-between. Alas, my cooking feels that way as well these days.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, I made a batch of pizza dough using a much loved recipe from <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/332275/basic-pizza-dough">Martha Stewart</a>. I've been meaning to attempt to recreate one of my favorite pizzas: the Bianca Skizza from <a href="http://www.gigihudsonvalley.com/index.php">Gigi Market</a> (I would probably eat this every day if I lived in the Hudson Valley... but my scale is happy I don't!) Yesterday felt like the perfect day to give it a try! Gigi's version has fig jam, pears, goat cheese, arugula, and white truffle oil. I did a spin-off of this version, using what we had at home (and finally using up the last of the pears from last week's farm share!). I added white vermont cheddar, sea salt, and dried lavender and omitted the arugula and white truffle oil. The result was a delicious, sweet and savory pizza. For me, the taste and ingredients captured that sense of changing seasons perfectly!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KXn86zZkhzg/TnFiVakNR4I/AAAAAAAAAMM/cmZf34k3r1U/s1600/pizza1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KXn86zZkhzg/TnFiVakNR4I/AAAAAAAAAMM/cmZf34k3r1U/s320/pizza1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Before baking </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: small;">Pizza for Early Fall</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
What you need:<br />
<br />
1 pound of <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/332275/basic-pizza-dough">Basic Pizza Dough</a> (make the whole recipe, freeze the other half and save it for another time!)<br />
<br />
2 pears<br />
<br />
Fig Jam (I used Dalmatia Fig Spread but encourage you to make you're own if you're feeling extra adventurous)<br />
<br />
Goat cheese (I used a mild, young cheese but would love to try it with an aged chevre like <a href="http://www.cypressgrovechevre.com/cheeses/ripened-cheeses/humboldt-fog.html">Humbolt Fog</a> or a Rocamadour)<br />
<br />
Extra Sharp White Cheddar<br />
<br />
Dried lavender buds<br />
<br />
Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">...</div><br />
What you do:<br />
<br />
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Oil a baking sheet and place a piece of parchment over the top.<br />
<br />
2. Stretch and roll dough until it<br />
<br />
3. Brush EVOO onto surface of dough<br />
<br />
4. Spread a thin layer of fig jam onto surface of dough<br />
<br />
5. Cut pears into thin slices. Arrange on top of pizza.<br />
<br />
6. Slice thin pieces of cheddar cheese and arrange on top of the pears. Using a spoon, scoop softened goat cheese from container and add a few dollops around the surface of the dough.<br />
<br />
7. Season with sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Sprinkle a few pinches of dried lavender buds on top of the other ingredients.<br />
<br />
8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown in color. <br />

I had never had muesli before, and always thought it was a spin-off of granola, which never suited my tastes. Was I wrong! Before I headed out to class in the morning I would sit down at the dining table and eat a bowl of <a href="http://www.allos.de/english/home.html">Allos </a>Amaranth Wildberry Muesli with Rice Milk and a bowl of coffee. It was the most nourishing, delicious breakfast I had ever had, and I never got bored of it.<br />
<br />
Alas, when I returned to the states, I thought it would be easy to find the same, if not very similar, type of Muesli. I tried all the brands that Whole Foods had, to no avail. Now, two years later, coming to terms with the fact that it would be absurd to pay 13 pounds to have a bag of it shipped here to the states, I've decided to create my own!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FfcqohzH5rw/Tm-hZGxoD5I/AAAAAAAAAMA/zFd4JmCEMbE/s1600/muesli.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FfcqohzH5rw/Tm-hZGxoD5I/AAAAAAAAAMA/zFd4JmCEMbE/s320/muesli.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Wild Berry Muesli<br />
<br />
<br />
What you need:<br />
<br />
1 cup Amaranth Seeds<br />
<br />
3/4 cup Millet<br />
<br />
3/4 cup Roasted Almonds, Chopped <br />
<br />
1/4 cup Roasted Flax Seeds (I like Trader Joe's Golden Roasted Flax Seeds)<br />
<br />
2 cups Rolled Oats (not the instant kind)<br />
<br />
4-5 tbsp Raw Agave Syrup (to mix with the oats)<br />
<br />
2-3 cups of mixed dried berries (I use Trader Joe's Freeze Dried Blueberries and Strawberries, along with Himalania Goji Berries)<br />
<br />
Generous Pinch of Cinnamon<br />
<br />
1 small shallow pan with a cover<br />
<br />
1 large mixing bowl<br />
<br />
1 large plastic or glass container for storing<br />
<br />
1. Pop the amaranth seeds. Do this by heating the small pan on the stove top until very hot. Then, add approx. 1 tbsp of seeds to the pan. Cover and wait until you start to hear the seeds begin to pop. Then, shake the covered pan over the heat until the popping stops. At this point, not all of the seeds will have popped into tiny white kernels. That's okay though, they're still edible! Transfer to your large mixing bowl and repeat, in batches, until all of the amaranth is popped.<br />
<br />
2. Repeat process used for popping amaranth for the millet, working in batches until you've reached your desired amount. For the millet, you don't need to keep the pan covered, instead you can just continuously stir the grain until the popping noises stop. Transfer millet to large mixing bowl.<br />
<br />
3. In the same pan, add 1 cup of oats. Drizzle a few tablespoons of agave syrup and stir continuously until oats are browned. Add more or less syrup depending on your taste. Repeat with second cup of oats. Transfer to large mixing bowl with millet and amaranth.<br />
<br />
4. Let ingredients cool.<br />
<br />
5. When the millet, amaranth, and oat mixture is cooled, add the dried berries, roasted chopped almonds, flax seed, and cinnamon. Stir all ingredients together in the bowl and transfer to your storage containers.<br />
<br />
6. Shake and enjoy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6U_ZKtvbhI8/Tm-hgYf_ERI/AAAAAAAAAME/NmiEZzARKJg/s1600/muesli+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6U_ZKtvbhI8/Tm-hgYf_ERI/AAAAAAAAAME/NmiEZzARKJg/s320/muesli+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The great thing about this recipe is that you can really add as much of each ingredient as you like, to suit your tastes. You can also add other toasted nuts, seeds, or grains. I personally like this mix of ingredients because the muesli isn't too sweet but gets flavor from the berries, and a bit of extra sweetness from the agave syrup. The result is a crunchy, slightly sweet, slightly tangy cereal. I especially love it with almond milk. Or, try it sprinkled over some Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. A little of this cereal goes a long way in terms of nutrition and it's super filling. Enjoy!Ninahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366607227785373605noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726805108195626286.post-4775601277128206132011-07-25T14:19:00.001-04:002011-07-25T14:31:03.662-04:00GARDEN!<div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Aren't they beautiful?<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I'm finally back home in Brooklyn after a six-week stay in Northampton. It's crazy to think that I'll be here for a while, now that college is over. At the moment, I am trying to make the best of being unemployed by doing lots of the things I love to do but don't usually have the chance to. This means I'm spending most of my mornings in the garden-- watering the plants, weeding, and picking veggies. In the afternoons, I've been trying to find new and creative ways to use all of the delicious fresh vegetables we have from the garden and from our CSA.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfp7be9-GYk/Ti20ugzox7I/AAAAAAAAALw/W5gkLL8Du-c/s1600/IMG_2350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfp7be9-GYk/Ti20ugzox7I/AAAAAAAAALw/W5gkLL8Du-c/s320/IMG_2350.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A basket full of vegetables from our garden! The last of the rhubarb, hot and sweet italian peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Yesterday, I picked four ENORMOUS zucchinis. It must be the heart or something because the size of these are uncanny! We were worried we had let them get too large, since we had been away in Northampton and Saratoga Springs for the weekend and therefore, hadn't had a chance to harvest. But, much to our surprise, the zuchinni were super delicious! So far, my family and I have eaten zuchinni in some incarnation for breakfast, lunch and dinner yesterday and today. For starters, I made scrambled eggs with zuchinni, kale, chives, and sage from our garden, and with some onions from our farm share. With a little white truffle oil drizzled on top it was delicious! Then I grated the rest of that enormous zuchinni and used it to make two loaves of zuchinni bread. We used some of the smaller plants for our dinner: zuchinnis stuffed with onions, herbs and quinoa. We baked the boiled zuchinni with the filling and with some mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top. I added some cut up red and orange heirloom tomatoes from the farm share and some extra rosemary. My favorite!<br />

I added some heirloom tomatoes and fresh herbs for the perfect summertime quinoa salad.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div>This morning, its back in the garden. Right now, I'm roasting some beets with garlic scapes (both from our CSA), sprinkled with some fresh picked oregano. I'm about to cook up some zuchinni pancakes-- made with onion, flour, bread crumbs, eggs, mixed herbs, salt, pepper, and Parmesan. I just used the rest of the heirloom tomatoes to eat with the quinoa, tossed with some lemon zest, basil and rosemary. Here are some pictures below of the garden, and what I've been cooking! Enjoy!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I am absolutely obsessed with everything elderflower right now. Cocktails made with St.Germain are a summetime staple right now (the Beehive in Boston has a fabulous version of a St.Germain cocktail: the St. Normandie, made with gin, white wine, and St. Germain). A non-alcoholic version sounds just perfect and so refreshing to sip on during a warm summer afternoon in the garden. Think fresh picked basil and mint with elderflower syrup, sparkling water, and lemon slices!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">I recently discovered this amazing company and their beautiful jewelry through one of my favorite blogs: <a href="http://www.acaseofthemundays.com/">A Case of the Mundays</a>. The Riverbed Necklace is definitely one of my favorite designs but all of the jewelry is beautiful, made of 100 % recycled paper, and helps support and empower craftswomen in Uganda. Fabulous! What a genius idea. I just love the simple, classic design of these dishtowels though. I plan on buying them in bulk. I'm personally a big collector of old apothecary bottles, old jars, and pretty much anything like this. Lucky for me, I just hit the jackpot at a garage sale out in Massachusetts recently: four apothecary jars (though not quite as lovely as the ones above), an antique wooden crate (perfect for planting or for using as shelving in a kitchen), and a whole collection of vintage engineering and math manuals full of strange and unfamiliar diagrams that will be perfect for making collages! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I saw this book at the gift shop at the Met and knew I had to have it. Okay, I didn't buy it then but I know I will soon! Beyond my collection of old apothecary bottles, I'm also a book collector! Much to the dismay of my bookshelves, I can never resist a book that combines nature and art, particularly one that is full of gorgeous botanical illustrations. <br />

I'm so crazy for rose based fragrances these days. I have always been a huge fan of Roebud Perfume Co. Lip Balm, and I am completely obsessed with the Happ & Stahns perfume, full of notes of Alba rose, wood and musk, that I got for my three year anniversary! I just love the idea of blending rose with other scents. I just came across this book the other day while at <a href="http://www.gigitrattoria.com/market.htm">Gigi Market</a> up in Red Hook, NY and it's been on my mind ever since. It seems like the perfect seasonal cookbook and it's one I would just love to add to my collection!<br />

I couldn't be more proud and happy to have the Mother I do. And of course, my Grandma, and Aunt M as well. I hope everyone feels as lucky as I do today, and every day. I love you all. Happy Mothers Day everyone!<br />

This past week, <a href="http://small-measure.blogspot.com/">Ashley English</a> did another one of her <a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/category/small-measures">Small Measures With Ashley</a> features on Design*Sponge. I always love her beautiful and simple ideas. This week she had a lovely post about making herb-infused vodkas. I'm not too big on spirits, but I always love finding new ways for using fresh herbs from the garden! Plus, I absolutely LOVE the way the herbs look floating in the bottles with the hand-written tags... what a lovely idea!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JF45GnD9O_Y/TcV_C4hlCSI/AAAAAAAAAHE/C4YSd-fYrmU/s1600/Small+Measures.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JF45GnD9O_Y/TcV_C4hlCSI/AAAAAAAAAHE/C4YSd-fYrmU/s400/Small+Measures.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/2011/05/small-measures-with-ashley-herb-infused-vodkas.html">Design*Sponge</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">They would make such perfect gifts! Plus she added some flavor pairings form <i>The Flavor Bible</i>. My favorites?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Lavender paired with peaches, lemon peel or fresh berries</div><div style="text-align: center;">Mint with cardamom seeds and peaches</div><div style="text-align: center;">Rosemary with orange slices, apricots, or plums...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">YUM! </div><br />
I just can't wait to start getting fresh produce from the garden and from the<a href="http://flatbushfarmshare.wordpress.com/"> <b>Farm Share</b></a> we signed up for this Summer! Ashley's post really got me excited about all of the amazing and innovative ways we can use the abundance of plants that the Summer harvest will bring. This is our first time trying a farm share but I just couldn't resist the idea of picking up a fresh bundle of produce weekly. We signed up for the regular vegetable share but will also be getting a fruit share as well! I'm looking forward to sharing all of the lovely fruits and veggies we get, along with some great recipes and ideas for using them. I'll start posting those in June or July so stay tuned!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here are a few other simple culinary wonders that I just can't wait to make:</div><br />
<b><a href="http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/04/black-bread/">Pumpernickel Bread</a></b> (My favorite bread in the world! So excited to try this recipe form <a href="http://smittenkitchen.com/">Smitten Kitchen</a>)<br />
<b><a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/341897/tomato-jam">Tomato Jam</a></b> (One of my family's favorite summertime recipes... perfect for using up the hundreds of tomatoes from the garden! I can't wait to try it with<a href="http://www.cypressgrovechevre.com/cheeses/ripened-cheeses/humboldt-fog.html"> Cypress Grove Humbolt Fog Chevre</a>... an aged goat cheese with edible vegetable ash.... it's one of my favorite cheeses in the whole world.)<br />
<b><a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/2011/04/small-measures-with-ashley-homemade-butter.html">Homemade Butter</a></b> (Another great post by Ashley on Design*Sponge. She also has another lovely post that I am going to have to try for making beautiful and delicious sounding compound butters. Check that out <b><a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/2011/04/small-measures-with-ashley-spring-compound-butters.html">here</a></b>.)<br />
<b><a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/2010/07/small-measures-with-ashley-herbal-sun-teas-simple-syrups.html">Sun Tea</a> </b>(Yet again a post by Ashley... I <i>might </i>be obsessed with her ideas, I'm not sure. For more tea wonder and plenty of gorgeous recipes take a peek at the aptly named <a href="http://teaspoonsandpetals.typepad.com/teaspoons-petals/">Teaspoons & Petals</a>. That's right, its a tea blog!)<br />
<b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/16/dining/16diy-recipes.html#view=vin_d_orange">Vin d'Orange</a></b> (I found this recipe in the New York Times' D.I.Y. Cooking Handbook. I want to make pretty much everything from this article, but especially the <b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/16/dining/16diy-recipes.html#view=fresh_cheese">Fresh Cheese</a></b>, <b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/16/dining/16diy-recipes.html#view=horseradish_beer_mustard">Horseradish Beer Mustard</a></b>, <b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/16/dining/16diy-recipes.html#view=cr_me_fra_che">Crème Fraîche</a></b>, and <b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/16/dining/16diy-recipes.html#view=maple_vinegar">Maple Vinegar</a></b>... I'm definitely going to be a busy bee in the kitchen this summer!)<br />
<b><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/19/dining/19minirex3.html">Cardamom Scented Oatmeal Pancakes</a></b> (another New York Times find. I can't wait to serve these up for an al fresco weekend brunch with some honey and butter and plenty of fresh squeezed ginger-grapefruit juice!)<br />
<br />

I also am so excited to get a copy of Heidi Swanson's new book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1580082777/heidiswanson-20">Super Natural Everyday</a></i>. It's been everywhere lately. Design*Sponge and bunch of other blogs have all had recent features (and giveaways that I wish I had won!) on this gorgeous book. I can't wait to get a copy of my own and revel in all of the delicious recipes and beautiful photos. Heidi also has a blog, <a href="http://www.101cookbooks.com/">101 Cookbooks</a>, full of amazing and inspiring recipes and ideas.<br />
<br />
Well it looks like I have my summer set out for me, cooking-wise anyway. Feel free to share some of your own favorite fresh and simple recipes, I'd love to hear about them. And don't forget to stay tuned this summer for pictures and original recipes and ideas from my own cooking adventures.<br />

As is probably clear by now, I love using birds as images in my work. I decided to put moths, another favorite of mine, in this one which I was definitely happy about. It's really exciting to be putting together this little series since I can now combine bits and pieces from all of the lovely (and often strange) images I've been sourcing over the years. I hope you like them!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here aew some more images by one of my favorite artists, Joseph Cornell. His work is so haunting and so beautiful. He also often uses birds in his collages and shadow-boxes! Isn't this one lovely?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Here's another one... I don't know how many I'll make before I get sick of this! It's definitely been keeping me busy (read: procrastinating on working on my finals)... but I love it!<br />
<br />

Can't wait to make more...<br />

It was a little tricky to figure out, but I have always wanted to get better at using Photoshop. Since I don't have Photoshop on my computer I downloaded this free program. I think it's pretty cool! Definitely keeps my hands from getting all sticky and my floor from being covered in paper scraps!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fX1_h3fP2Po/TcNJDToVurI/AAAAAAAAAGk/IBQTdOyR1gI/s1600/crow+collage+watermark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fX1_h3fP2Po/TcNJDToVurI/AAAAAAAAAGk/IBQTdOyR1gI/s400/crow+collage+watermark.jpg" width="302" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qNqj5mPUUGI/TcDuU1BGOVI/AAAAAAAAAGY/5_bwboBXmsw/s1600/image_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />

</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think I want to make a whole series of these...with different birds and different other objects and surroundings. I used a map of Paris as the background for this image. I definitely want to make one using music sheet paper!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

We've started working on the garden for this season... I couldn't be more thrilled. The prospect of a whole backyard (well, a small concrete plot in the back of our Brooklyn home) filled with fresh flowers, fruits, and veggies, is just so exciting. We've been growing tomatoes and herbs every summer, with a spattering of other various vegetables. This year, however, we're getting really ambitious! We bought some of our seeds from the Hudson Valley Seed Library. The seed packets are designed by local artists and have beautiful designs! Check them out here: <a href="http://seedlibrary.org/catalog/artpacks/">Hudson Valley Seed Library</a>. Some of my favorites that we picked are "Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry," " Good Bug Blooms," "Calico Popcorn," and "Kaleidoscope Carrots." I can't wait to see them growing in the garden and better yet, I can't wait to harvest and enjoy them! <br />
<br />
We've been going to <a href="http://shopterrain.com/">Terrain</a> out in Glen Mills, PA since we discovered this gem of a store not too far from school. I am obsessed! Since we went there for dinner a few weeks ago, I just can't get enough. I bought two bird houses for the garden. One of them, all made from twigs and wood, I plan to hang with ribbon from a post or from the fence. The other is even more exciting! It's a little house attached to a long wooden stick that you can stick right in the ground! I plan to plant it in a pot with my Hummingbird and Butterfly Garden Seeds!<br />
<br />
I also bought this lovely little chalkboard (for $12 I just couldn't resist!):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d8v-3xcazxo/TcArfWxBtGI/AAAAAAAAADY/lDd6sNksLq0/s1600/thing.27561716.l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d8v-3xcazxo/TcArfWxBtGI/AAAAAAAAADY/lDd6sNksLq0/s1600/thing.27561716.l.jpg" /></a></div>...I can't wait to hang him up in the house and fill him with lovely little messages. Maybe I'll hang him in the yard and list the plants that are ready to harvest!<br />
<br />
What I am really wishing for now are terrariums and bell jars! Terrain has such a gorgeous selection of cloches, bell-jars, and terrariums, that I just can't help but want to fill my whole house with little green wonders.<br />
